The difference between Champagne and Prosecco

The new year is fast approaching and what better way to toast to the ending of 2020 than with your favorite sparkling beverage! So let’s discuss the differences between Champagne and Prosecco.

 Region

Champagne is from the Champagne region of France and is made with a variety of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.  Prosecco is produced in Italy and made from the Glera grapes. Fun Fact: In my research I learned that if your champagne is made in America it’s not real champagne. Real champagne is technically only made in Champagne, France. (We’ve been bamboozled).  However, if you get the chance to visit Paris the Champagne region is about 75 minutes away.

Production Method

Champagne is produced using what is called the traditional method, which means the bottle is fermented twice. The bubbles are produced while it is fermenting in the bottle. Prosecco is produced using the tank method, which means it is fermented in a stainless-steel tank. It is then placed in another sealed tank where the yeast and sugar is added to complete the fermentation process.

  Cost

Another notable difference is cost. Champagne is more expensive due to the costly fermentation process. Since Prosecco is produced using the tank method it is easier to mass produce, which makes it less expensive.

 Taste

Besides price, taste is the biggest difference. Champagne has a very crisp and full-bodied taste. Prosecco is sweeter with lighter and less defined bubbles.

Veuve Clicquot

Clicquot is my personal favorite Champagne. It’s straight to the point: crisp, dry and bubbly. You can also find Moet, which is very popular for around the same price range.
